Best finish: Round of 16 (1998)

Norway have three World Cup appearances but none since 1998 — a 28-year absence. Their greatest achievement was beating Brazil 2-1 in France 1998, the defending runners-up and pre-tournament favourites. The Egil Olsen era produced memorable football built on direct play and aerial threat. A new generation featuring Erling Haaland aims to end the drought — though Haaland missed 2026 qualification.
Tournament Eras
The 1938 Debut — Losing to Italy
1938Norway participated in France 1938, losing 2-1 to Italy (the defending champions) after extra time in a direct-elimination format. Walter Eriksen scored Norway's goal. The performance was creditable against a dominant Italian side.
The Egil Olsen Era — 1994 and 1998
1994–1998Norway qualified for the 1994 and 1998 World Cups under manager Egil 'Drillo' Olsen, whose direct, long-ball style was dismissed by purists but devastatingly effective. In 1998 they beat Brazil 2-1 with goals from Tore André Flo and Kjetil Rekdal — then advanced to the Round of 16. Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Tore André Flo, and Henning Berg were the squad's spine.
Iconic Moments
Beating Brazil 2-1 — France 1998
Norway beat the pre-tournament favourites Brazil 2-1 in a stunning group-stage result. Tore André Flo equalised before Kjetil Rekdal's penalty secured the win. Brazil — with Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Bebeto — were unbeatable going into the match. Norway celebrated as if they had won the tournament.
