Senegal produced one of the World Cup's great debut performances in 2002 — beating reigning champions France and reaching the quarter-finals. The Lions of Teranga returned in 2018 and 2022, losing narrowly in the group stage in 2018 and the Round of 16 in 2022. With Sadio Mané, they remain Africa's most exciting team.

The 2002 Miracle Debut

2002

Senegal's World Cup debut in Korea/Japan 2002 was the tournament's greatest shock. They opened with a 1-0 win over reigning champions France — with Bouba Diop scoring and celebrating with an extraordinary dance around the corner flag. They went on to reach the quarter-finals before losing to Turkey in extra time, with Papa Bouba Diop and El Hadji Diouf as the stars of an unforgettable debut.

The Modern Lions — 2018 and 2022

2018–2022

Senegal returned with Sadio Mané and a generation of European-based stars. In 2018 they finished level with Japan on points and identical stats, only to be eliminated on the disciplinary record (yellow cards). In 2022 they won their first African Cup of Nations and reached the World Cup Round of 16, losing to England after Mané was injured before the tournament.

Beating France — The Champions Fall

Papa Bouba Diop's goal gave Senegal a 1-0 win over defending champions France in one of the greatest World Cup upsets. Diop's celebration — draping himself in Senegal's flag after removing his shirt — became the tournament's defining image. France were eliminated from the group stage without scoring a goal.
