Ivory Coast appeared at three consecutive World Cups from 2006 to 2014, always featuring Didier Drogba and a talented generation that included Yaya Touré and Salomon Kalou. Despite enormous individual quality, the Elephants were consistently drawn into 'Groups of Death' and never advanced beyond the group stage. The 2026 appearance under a new generation, led by Simon Adingra, marks a new chapter.
Tournament Eras
The Drogba Generation — Three Tough Groups
2006–2014Ivory Coast qualified for three successive World Cups with arguably the strongest African squad of the era. In 2006 they were drawn with Argentina, Netherlands, and Serbia — losing all three. In 2010 they faced Brazil, Portugal, and North Korea. In 2014 they were placed with Greece, Colombia, and Japan. Each time the group was brutal; each time they failed to advance. The waste of a golden generation remains one of African football's greatest disappointments.
Iconic Moments
Drogba's Emotional 2006 Debut
Didier Drogba made his World Cup debut against Argentina in a group that also contained Netherlands. Despite losing all three matches, Drogba's performances and the team's spirit earned worldwide respect. His tears after the tournament — knowing they'd drawn an impossibly hard group — resonated across Africa.
Beaten by Greece in Injury Time — 2014
Ivory Coast led Greece 1-0 in the final group match and needed just a point to advance. Greece scored twice in injury time to eliminate the Elephants — a devastating end to the Drogba generation's World Cup story.
