18 days to go: Al Rihla-shy Japan stun Spain

Japan had only 18 per cent possession against Spain at Qatar 2022, yet incredibly emerged victorious. It is the lowest possession ever recorded for a winning team in a World Cup game. Alvaro Morata headed La Roja into the lead, but quick-fire goals shortly after the restart, from Ritsu Doan and Ao Tanaka, secured the Asian heavyweights a 2-1 upset. Japan, who had beaten European opposition just once in 10 attempts heading into the tournament – a Keisuke Honda-inspired a 3-1 win over Denmark at South Africa 2010 – had slain giants Germany and Spain to go through as Group E winners.
