Young Player Award contenders make mark ahead of Round of 16

The has honoured some of football's biggest names, from Thomas Muller and Paul Pogba to Kylian Mbappe and Enzo Fernandez. A new generation of talent has taken centre stage at the , with several players strengthening their claims for the award as the knockout stage began.

As the World Cup field continues to narrow, the Round of 32 offered another chance for some of the tournament's most precocious individuals to show their quality under pressure and shape the conversation around the Young Player Award.

Here, FIFA highlights six players who enhanced their credentials in the first knockout round.

Comfortable in possession and utterly unfazed by the weight of expectation at the iconic Mexico City Stadium, Mora has become increasingly influential for El Tri as the tournament has progressed. At 17, the Club Tijuana midfielder became the second-youngest player to start a FIFA World Cup knockout match after the late, great Pele, but his performance went beyond that statistic. Producing another assured display, Mora was once again at the heart of Mexico's brightest moments against Ecuador, carrying a threat in the final third as El Tri ended their long wait for a

Having impressed throughout the group stage, Nusa underlined his growing importance to Norway with another decisive contribution in their . Picking up possession on the left, the 20-year-old cut inside before curling a superb finish into the top corner to give Stale Solbakken’s team the lead against Côte d'Ivoire. It made Nusa his nation’s youngest ever World Cup goalscorer and was the latest telling contribution at a tournament in which he has repeatedly shown his ability to change games. Quick over the first few yards and fearless in one-on-one situations, the RB Leipzig winger caused Côte d'Ivoire's defenders problems throughout as Norway booked a Round of 16 meeting with Brazil.

Having announced himself during the group stage with three goals and an assist, Manzambi continued his outstanding tournament by helping Switzerland end an 88-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory. The 20-year-old provided a superb low cross for Breel Embolo to open the scoring after just 10 minutes, taking his tally to five goal involvements in four matches. Equally impressive was his all-round display, with the dynamic midfielder combining attacking quality with tireless work out of possession as Switzerland booked a Round of 16 meeting with Colombia.

Brazil's teenage duo continued to justify the growing excitement surrounding them as the five-time world champions to reach the Round of 16. Rayan retained his place in the starting XI and was involved in the decisive late move that led to the Seleção’s winning goal, pressing to win the ball before feeding Bruno Guimaraes in the build-up to Gabriel Martinelli's stoppage-time strike. Endrick's contribution came from the bench, with the Real Madrid forward introduced at half-time as Brazil searched for a way back into the contest. His movement and energy added another attacking dimension to Carlo Ancelotti’s side as Brazil completed their comeback.

Elsewhere, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi both played their part as to reach the Round of 16, with Yamal showing flashes of his attacking quality and Cubarsi producing another solid defensive display. Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi once again showed the maturity and intelligence that have distinguished his tournament as the Atlas Lions on penalties.

England's Nico O'Reilly followed his encouraging displays in the group stage by putting in another impressive performance in the , while Canada defender Luc de Fougerolles continued to look at home on the World Cup stage as his side .
