West Germany v Yugoslavia Italy 1990 | Group stage Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan
West Germany were 2-1 ahead when the clock ticked past the hour in their Italy 1990 opener against Yugoslavia, and Lothar Matthaus had already curled home a fine goal from the edge of the box. He was not done yet.
His second strike of the night showcased the range of qualities which made him one the most complete footballers of his generation.
After receiving a pass from Klaus Augenthaler inside his own half, Matthaus turned instantly before gliding forward into the open turf at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Yugoslavia sweeper Davor Jozic sprinted out in an attempt to halt Matthaus’ progress, but the German captain brilliantly side-stepped his challenge. A fabulous ball-striker, Matthaus' eyes lit up as he advanced towards shooting range and he promptly unleashed a vicious drive which left goalkeeper Tomislav Ivkovic helpless.
Matthaus’ virtuoso display helped his team kick off the tournament in style – and four weeks later he would hoist the World Cup trophy into the sky following West Germany’s final triumph over Argentina.
