We’re counting down to the by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.

Argentina v England Mexico 1986 | Quarter-final Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

Later voted as the FIFA World Cup Goal of the Century, Diego Maradona's astonishing individual effort in their Mexico 1986 quarter-final sent shockwaves across the globe.

The legendary No10 had already seized the spotlight by putting his team ahead with his infamous 'Hand of God' goal, but his extraordinary run-and-finish cemented his status as one of the finest talents planet football had ever seen.

After taking possession inside his own half, Maradona evaded Peter Reid and Peter Beardsley with one devastating movement. In a mesmerising show of balance, speed and control, he then breezed past a succession of England challenges before rounding Peter Shilton and slotting the ball home. While Maradona would later downplay his effort as a "nice goal", team-mate Jorge Valdano was eager to salute a moment of genius.

“At first, I went along with him (in the attack)," he said. "Then I realised I was just another spectator. It was his goal and had nothing to do with the team. It was Diego’s personal adventure, one that was totally spectacular.”
