Les Bleus were tipped by many to repeat their 2018 triumph, but fell short after being shocked by Spain in the semi-final and then losing to England in Miami. Didier Deschamps' men had been cruising until the last four, brushing aside Senegal, Iraq and Norway in Group I, before routine knockout victories against Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco, where their defence remained unbreached across all three matches.

The Red Devils were bidding to improve on their disappointing group stage elimination at Qatar 2022, and they achieved this feat. However, Belgium's World Cup journey was halted at the quarter-final stage by Spain. The Atlas Lions were unable to replicate their historic semi-final run at Qatar 2022 after defeat to France in a re-run of that famous meeting, this time at the quarter-final stage. Morocco finished as runners-up in Group C after drawing with Brazil and claiming victories over Scotland and Haiti. Mohamed Ouahbi then led the African nation to wins over the Netherlands and co-hosts Canada before the 2-0 defeat to Didier Deschamps' side in Boston saw their run come to an end.
Switzerland exited the tournament in heart-breaking fashion against Argentina at the quarter-final stage after succumbing to two late goals from La Albiceleste, with Breel Embolo's sending off reducing the Swiss to ten players. Murat Yakin's side finished top of Group B with wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada, as well as drawing with Qatar. Reaching the last eight equalled Switzerland's best-ever World Cup finish, last achieved when they hosted the tournament in 1954.
El Tri kicked off their thrilling World Cup ride with a win over South Africa in the tournament's curtain-raiser at the historic Mexico City Stadium. The co-hosts yielded four clean sheet victories, giving Mexico four wins at a World Cup for the first time. They also lifted their 40-year knockout-round curse with a win over Ecuador, before a narrow and dramatic defeat to eventual third-placed side England saw their enthralling run come to an end.
Regarded by many pundits as a dark horse of the tournament, Colombia were unbeaten in four matches at World Cup 2026 after La Sele topped Group K and then triumphed over Ghana in the Round of 32. However, it was penalty heartache for Nestor Lorenzo and his team after a gritty goalless draw with Switzerland saw Colombia go down 4-3 in the shootout at the Round of 16 stage to miss out on a quarter-final clash with Lionel Messi and Argentina.
Brazil were dreaming of adding a record-extending sixth World Cup star to their shirt, but their campaign ended in disappointment after they were eliminated at the Round of 16 by Erling Haaland's Norway. The defeat was the first exit at this stage for the Seleção since 1990. Carlo Ancelotti's side topped Group C with seven points and then saw off Japan, but fell victim to a repeat of the loss to Norway in the group stage of the tournament in 1998, with Halaand's double leaving Neymar in tears.
Mauricio Pochettino's side were the final co-hosts to exit the tournament after defeat to Belgium at the Round of 16. The Stars and Stripes rewrote their history books at World Cup 2026 when they scored four goals in one match against Paraguay and sealed two group stage wins for the first time thanks to victory over Australia. After seeing off Bosnia and Herzegovina, USA's dream was ended with a comprehensive 4-1 defeat by the Red Devils in Seattle.

In Canada's third appearance in the global showpiece, and their first on home soil, they achieved a slew of milestones. The Reds subsequently fell to defeat to Morocco in Houston at the Round of 16 stage, but the fans were left with a sense of pride about their performances.
Egypt's World Cup run changed the global perception of the Pharaohs, after they put the disappointment of their 2018 group stage exit behind them with a journey to the Round of 16. In this edition of the competition they achieved the country's first World Cup victory and first knockout round win. Egypt were on the verge of one of the competition's greatest upsets when they led Argentina in Atlanta, but it wasn't to be for the departing Mohamed Salah after the world champions rallied to edge them with one of their many dramatic late comebacks.
Paraguay produced one of the shocks of the tournament when they eliminated traditional World Cup powerhouse Germany on penalties to reach the Round of 16, after finishing third in Group D behind USA and Australia. However, eventual fourth-placed France were a step too far for Gustavo Alfaro's team. The Oranje topped Group F undefeated, scoring ten goals in three games, and they were on course to book a spot in the Round of 16 with a victory over Morocco. A stoppage-time equaliser forced a draw though, before they were edged out on penalties for a third consecutive tournament. The painful defeat revived memories of Qatar 2022, when the Netherlands were eliminated by Argentina on spot-kicks at the quarter-final stage.
Four-time world champions Germany suffered a shock Round of 32 exit at the hands of Paraguay. The European nation topped Group E with two victories, but it was penalty heartache that awaited as they lost 4-3 in the shootout following a 1-1 draw. Since winning their fourth world title in 2014, Germany failed to emerge from the group stage in 2018 and 2022, before being eliminated before the Round of 16 once again this time around.
The Elephants came into the World Cup with little fanfare and looking to move beyond the group stage for the first time in their history at the fourth time of asking. The 2018 finalists and 2022 semi-finalists exited the tournament in the Round of 32 after a 2-1 loss to Portugal in a scintillating showdown. After a 4-2 reverse in their opening match against England, the Vatreni recovered to beat Panama 1-0 and Ghana 2-1 to finish second in Group L. Luka Modric and Co then pushed Portugal to the brink before making their earliest exit since 2014.
The Asian powerhouse finished second in Group F by defeating Tunisia 4-0 and securing memorable draws with the Netherlands (2-2) and Sweden (1-1). Japan scored first in their Round of 32 match against five-time world champions Brazil but could not hold on. A winner from Gabriel Martinelli in the sixth minute of added time once again sent the AFC side home after their first knockout stage game.
Australia finished second in a group that contained co-hosts USA and surprise package Paraguay, but were undone in the Round of 32 by Egypt. The Pharaohs defeated the Socceroos 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, sending them home in the first knockout round for the second tournament in a row.
The Leopards took the hard road to the World Cup, via the play-off tournament, and needed similar resilience at the global showpiece. Congo DR finished as one of the best eight third-placed sides, advancing to the Round of 32 out of a group that contained Portugal and Colombia. For a while, Brian Cipenga’s early goal looked like it would help them advance past England, but a late Harry Kane double ended that dream. Their appearance in the Round of 32 marks a best-ever World Cup finish.
The Black Stars’ staunch defence helped them finish among the eight best third-placed sides, qualifying for the knockout rounds from a group that included European heavyweights England and Croatia. In the Round of 32, they fell to a relentless Colombia, but their qualification beyond the group stage was an improvement on four years ago.
La Tricolor were eliminated by co-hosts Mexico (2-0) after a World Cup campaign that never fully took off. Ecuador were stunned in their opening game against Côte d’Ivoire, losing 1-0, but after a 0-0 draw with Curaçao, they managed to shock Germany 2-1 and qualify for the Round of 32.
The 2010 World Cup hosts opened and closed their 2026 campaign against two of the co-hosts, making their first knockout stage appearance along the way. After losing their opening match 2-0 to Mexico, Bafana Bafana battled back to draw 1-1 against Czechia and defeat Korea Republic 1-0. Their Round of 32 match against Canada looked set for extra time when Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic late winner to send them home.
The 5-1 scoreline is what Sweden may be best remembered for at the 2026 showpiece. Graham Potter’s side hit their high-water mark in their opening match, securing a 5-1 victory over Tunisia. However, the Netherlands then defeated them by the same margin in the following game. After a 1-1 draw with Japan, Sweden faced France's fearsome forwards in the last 32, succumbing to a 3-0 loss.
In their first global tournament for 28 years, Ralf Rangnick’s men finished second in Group J behind Argentina, and played one of the games of the tournament, a pulsating 3-3 draw against Algeria in which their last goal deep into added time secured qualification for the Round of 32. Their reward was a date with eventual winners Spain, who dispatched them 3-0.
Another side who saw their World Cup campaign start and end with meetings against co-hosts, as they kicked off proceedings in Toronto with a 1-1 draw against Canada before exiting the tournament in San Francisco Bay Area following a 2-0 loss to USA. Between those two fixtures, they suffered a 4-1 loss to Switzerland in Los Angeles before overcoming Qatar 3-1 in Seattle to qualify from Group B in third place.
The Desert Foxes emerged from Group J as one of the best eight third-place qualifiers having recovered from an opening game defeat by Argentina to take three points from Jordan and then one against Austria in an astonishing 3-3 draw which saw two goals scored deep into added time. Their World Cup journey would come to an end in the Round of 32, though, with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Switzerland in Vancouver.
The Lions of Teranga were five minutes away from a place in the Round of 16, as they led Belgium 2-0 late on. However, a late Red Devils comeback took the game into extra-time before Youri Tielemans' late, late penalty ended a draining encounter. Senegal had secured progress as one of the best third-place sides, recovering from defeats to France and Norway to beat Iraq 5-0 and secure their Round of 32 berth.
The tournament debutants captured hearts around the globe as they qualified from Group H against all odds, becoming the only side to prevent Spain from scoring all competition as goalkeeper Vozinha became an overnight hero. Further draws with Uruguay and Saudi Arabia set up a dream meeting with holders Argentina, where Cabo Verde twice hit back to level against Lionel Messi and Co, including a spectacular second from Sidny Lopes Cabral, before La Albiceleste secured a late winner.
Team Melli narrowly missed out on a place in the Round of 32, finishing ninth among the third-placed sides, but departed the tournament with an unbeaten record following draws with New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in Group G.
After opening their tournament with victory over Czechia, hopes were high that the AFC side would be on their way to the knockout phase, only for back-to-back losses to Mexico and South Africa to scupper their chances.
