The book on the is now closed, with the Concacaf region successfully hosting the global finals for a fourth time. As all the teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean now turn their attention to 2030, the competitive landscape will take on a much different form.
2026 co-hosts Canada, Mexico and USA will re-join their Concacaf colleagues in a new qualifying cycle. Prior to the start of the preliminaries, teams from the region will engage in three crucial tournaments that could serve as a catalyst for a berth to the FIFA World Cup 2030™.
This week, 12 teams are convening in Mexico for the Concacaf U-20 Championship, which will not only determine the four teams that qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027™ in Azerbaijan/Uzbekistan, but also the nation that will join hosts USA in the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at Los Angeles 2028.
The Men’s Olympic Football Tournament has long provided a showcase for breakout performances from Concacaf players. Look no further than when goalkeeper Brad Friedel sparkled on the stage at Barcelona 1992 for USA and went on to have a standout career, earning spots on three World Cup squads. There was also Honduras winger Andy Najar sizzled at London 2012 in their quarter-final run and then was a driving force in Los Catrachos’ qualification for Brazil 2014.
With players such as newly crowned world champion Alex Baena of Spain and talented French duo Michael Olise and Desire Doue among the players who shone at Paris 2024 and then starred at World Cup 2026, the motivation to reach Los Angeles 2028 will be a powerful one.
When the calendar ticks over to September, a new edition of the Concacaf Nations League will begin, with the region’s senior teams returning to action.
For 2026 co-hosts Canada, Mexico and USA, it represents a chance to start evaluating some of the younger players coming up through the system while building off during the global finals.
Those three nations, along with Panama, will start the competition in the quarter-final round. Prior to that, 12 teams will take part in the League A group stage, including World Cup 2026 participants Curaçao and Haiti, who will each want to prove that they can remain part of the Concacaf elite.
No doubt some of the teams that barely missed out on World Cup qualification will be taking aim at advancing to the final eight. Jamaica and Suriname each suffered heartbreak on the final matchday of 2026 qualifying and then came up narrowly short in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament last March in Mexico. No doubt a strong start to a new cycle will be on the minds of their fervent supporters.
Costa Rica, who had appeared in three successive World Cups prior to 2026, and South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 side Honduras are also in the League A mix and will no doubt want to put the bitterness of finishing behind Haiti in their 2026 qualifying group behind them. Los Ticos are now under the direction of Argentinian Fernando Batista, while Spaniard Jose Antonio Molina is at the helm of Honduras.
The Nations League offers the chance of a fresh start and to set the tone, including for two Central American sides that reached the final stage of qualifying and have opted to retain their coaches. Veteran coach Luis Fernando Tena is poised for another run on the Guatemala touchline, as is El Salvador’s Hernan Dario ‘Bolillo’ Gomez, who famously qualified Panama for Russia 2018.
The Nations League serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup, which will begin in June of next year with 16 teams and stands to be one of the most open and competitive in recent memory, as the rest of the region take aim at reigning champions Mexico and seven-time winners USA.
Canada’s lone Concacaf trophy came in the 2000 Gold Cup and there would be no better boost to Jesse Marsch’s first full cycle as coach than to add a second piece of hardware to the Reds' trophy cabinet.
Panama made the decision to bring back experienced coach Thomas Christiansen, who guided the Canaleros to World Cup 2026, and there is no doubt that the target is a first Gold Cup trophy.
Panama have come agonizingly close to winning Concacaf hardware in recent years, with runner-up finishes in the 2023 Gold Cup 2023 and 2025 Nations League. For a side that has emerged as the best in Central America in recent years, a maiden title would only strengthen their resolve to qualify for a third World Cup.
Costa Rica, Honduras and Jamaica are all teams that have reached a Gold Cup decider but fallen short at the final hurdle. After failing to qualify for the 2026 global finals, this trio will be keen to go far at the Hold Cup and perhaps make a cinderella run to the title. There would be no better way to gain momentum for qualifying than to bring back home a trophy to their football-crazed fans.
