Van Hecke: I feel empty after Netherlands' World Cup dream ends

The battled bravely against Morocco, the fourth-placed team at Qatar 2022, and came within touching distance of the round of 16. But the Atlas Lions shattered the Oranje’s World Cup dream in dramatic fashion. Jan Paul van Hecke’s emotions after the match were entirely understandable.

The Brighton defender spoke of his deep disappointment after seeing the Netherlands’ hopes of lifting the come to an end. Ronald Koeman’s side had arrived at the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s standout teams, topping Group F with 10 goals in three matches.

Football, however, can be cruel. Just as the Netherlands looked set to celebrate a place in the round of 16 after Cody Gakpo's goal had given them a 1-0 lead, Morocco struck deep into stoppage time to level the match and shatter the Oranje's celebrations. The equaliser forced the game into extra time and, ultimately, a penalty shootout, where Morocco prevailed.

The dramatic turnaround left the Dutch players stunned. Their celebrations quickly turned into heartbreak, and the dressing room was engulfed by the disappointment of letting victory slip away. “I feel completely empty after this elimination,” Van Hecke told FIFA. “I’m hugely disappointed that we didn’t qualify for the next round. Our dream was to win the World Cup, so right now it hurts so much to see that all disappear.”

Despite facing a Morocco side that reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, the Netherlands remained disciplined throughout the contest. They defended their lead resolutely until the closing moments of normal time, but even that proved insufficient against a team that has developed a habit of finding a way to win. Van Hecke reflected on how he saw the match unfold. “I think we had a good first half and created some good chances. In the second half, maybe we dropped a little too deep. But I don’t think Morocco created many chances. They had more possession than us, but that was about it.”

The Oranje were then forced into an additional 30 minutes, with fatigue beginning to take its toll as Morocco controlled possession for long spells during the second half and extra time. “We ran out of energy towards the end of the game,” Van Hecke said. “That’s why we tried to play on the counter-attack to create chances. We had already scored the opening goal, so it’s incredibly difficult to concede an equaliser in stoppage time. And then it becomes even more painful when you lose on penalties.”

The defeat also revived painful memories of Qatar 2022, when the Netherlands were eliminated by Argentina on penalties after Emiliano Martínez produced a series of crucial saves. Ahead of this match, Ronald Koeman had spoken about the importance of practising them, while acknowledging that the psychological pressure of a shootout can never truly be replicated in training. He also noted that goalkeepers have become increasingly adept at unsettling penalty takers.

Once again, the Netherlands found themselves on the wrong side of one. For Van Hecke, however, there was little point searching for deeper explanations. “I don’t think there’s much to say about penalties. They’re part of football. Today, luck wasn’t on our side. To some extent, that’s all it comes down to, and today we didn’t have it.”
