The Portuguese quartet who powered PSG to glory

will bid to win the for the first time in their history with four players who have .

As they did last season, left-back Nuno Mendes, midfielders and Joao Neves, and striker Goncalo Ramos once again lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with the French club.

The first three were in the starting line-up for the shootout win over Arsenal in Budapest on Saturday, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Although he began the match on the bench, Ramos was brought into the action by Luis Enrique and kept his nerve from the spot during the shootout, converting the Parisiens' opening kick.

Vitinha, who was eventually substituted during extra time and did not take part in the shootout, was nevertheless named Player of the Match.

The Champions League triumph, which is PSG's second in as many years, also secured the French side's place at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2026™, a competition in which they are the reigning champions.

Following the title win, the Portuguese quartet will link up with their international team-mates for two friendlies ahead of the World Cup. Portugal host Chile in Oeiras on 6 June before bidding farewell to their supporters four days later in Leiria against Nigeria.

Thanks to the four European champions, , surpassing even the country's traditional powerhouses Benfica, Porto and Sporting.

Of the four, Nuno Mendes is the longest-serving player in Paris. He signed for the club in 2021 after just two seasons playing in Sporting's first team. Initially arriving on loan, the club soon exercised their option to make the move a permanent one.

The defender is the only Portuguese member of PSG's squad who has been at the club longer than sporting director, Luis Campos. Also Portuguese, Campos joined PSG in 2022 and is widely credited with reshaping the club's recruitment strategy, moving away from established global stars like Sergio Ramos, Neymar and Lionel Messi, and instead focussing on emerging talents yet to fully break through on the international stage.

Vitinha arrived from Porto during Campos' first transfer window at the club. Ramos, then one of Benfica's brightest prospects, followed a year later, while Joao Neves, another product of the Eagles' academy, joined in 2024.

Today, it is impossible to think of PSG without thinking of the Portuguese contingent. Vitinha, Neves and Mendes are not only guaranteed starters but are also key figures in Luis Enrique's tactical set-up. Ramos, while primarily used as a substitute, continues to contribute. The forward netted 12 times this season, a figure only bettered by four PSG players, all of which managed significantly more than his 1,700 minutes this campaign.

With these four players arriving on the highest of all club highs, as well as the likes of iconic captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to name but a few, Roberto Martinez will hoping this is the year Portugal and can be crowned world champions for the very first time.
