The most prolific World Cup coaches

Qualifying for one FIFA World Cup™ is a career-defining achievement for most coaches. Returning again and again across four-year cycles, new generations of players and changing football landscapes is far rarer.

Whether inspiring world champions or guiding nations across different continents, repeatedly navigating football’s biggest stage requires a certain combination of character and talent. With two coaches – Carlos Queiroz and Didier Deschamps – adding to their totals at the , here are the ten men who have appeared most often at the finals as head coaches.

Coached: Kuwait (1982), United Arab Emirates (1990), Brazil (1994 and 2006), Saudi Arabia (1998) and South Africa (2010)

No coach has appeared at more World Cups than Parreira. The Brazilian’s bow came with debutants Kuwait at Spain 1982 and he also took the UAE to their maiden finals eight years later. Parreira’s crowning achievement, however, came at USA 1994, leading Brazil to their first triumph since 1970 with a penalty-shootout victory over Italy in the final.

A fourth appearance with Saudi Arabia in 1998 saw Parreira removed from his post before the final group game, following defeats to Denmark and eventual champions France. The veteran returned to the Brazil hot-seat for Germany 2006 but Les Bleus were his undoing again – this time in the quarter-finals. Parreira’s swansong came at South Africa 2010 as he led hosts Bafana Bafana at a historic first tournament on African soil.

Coached: Mexico (1986), Costa Rica (1990), USA (1994), Nigeria (1998) and China PR (2002)

Milutinovic carved out one of the most remarkable careers in World Cup history as the first – and only – coach to lead five different nations at five consecutive tournaments. His journey began with hosts Mexico in 1986, when El Tri reached the quarter-finals before losing to West Germany on penalties. Four years later, he masterminded one of the biggest surprises of Italy 1990, guiding Costa Rica to the Round of 16 in the country's first-ever appearance at the tournament. Milutinovic then repeated the feat with hosts USA at the next World Cup, and again with Nigeria at France 1998, before leading China PR to their maiden finals in 2002.

Coached: Portugal (2010), IR Iran (2014, 2018 and 2022) and Ghana (2026)

After being appointed by Ghana a couple of months before this year’s tournament, Queiroz became only the third man to coach teams at five World Cups when he led the Black Stars in their 2026 opener against Panama. It could have been his sixth tournament as Queiroz’s first successful qualification came for Korea/Japan 2002, but he resigned from his post with South Africa ahead of the finals.

Eight years later, Queiroz finally led a team at the World Cup for the first time, taking his native Portugal to the last 16. Queiroz’s greatest accomplishment came next, as he guided IR Iran to successive World Cups for the first time in the nation’s history. Team Melli exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2018, but at the latter won their first game at the tournament since 1998, beating Morocco 1-0. After a short hiatus from the role, Iran called on Queiroz again in 2022 but despite registering a 2-0 victory over Wales, Team Melli were denied a place in knockout phase by England and USA.

Coached: West Germany (1966, 1970, 1974 and 1978)

Schon has held the record for most World Cup wins – 16 from 25 games – for almost 50 years. Between 1966 and 1978, he helped West Germany finish second, third, most memorably, first on home soil in 1974. Working with generations of stars like Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller, Schon oversaw one of international football's great dynasties.

Coached: France (2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026)

Deschamps joined this distinguished group in 2026 after establishing himself as one of France's most successful coaches. Having won the tournament as captain in 1998, he returned as coach to guide Les Bleus to glory in Russia in 2018 before reaching another final in 2022. With 20 World Cup matches under his belt already as coach – 15 of them victories – Deschamps could move ahead of legendary German coach Schon’s total of 25 if he inspires France to another deep run in 2026.

Coached: Uruguay (1990, 2010, 2014 and 2018)

The architect of Uruguay's modern revival, Tabarez restored La Celeste to the upper reaches of the international game, overseeing one of the most stable periods in the nation's history. The high point came in 2010, when Uruguay reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 40 years. Combining long-term planning with a deep understanding of Uruguay's footballing identity, Tabarez became one of the most respected coaching figures in the world during his time with La Celeste.

Coached: Germany (1938) and West Germany (1954, 1958 and 1962)

Herberger's name is forever linked to one of the World Cup's most famous stories. After leading Germany at France 1938, he returned to guide West Germany in Switzerland 16 years later, when he masterminded the ‘Miracle of Bern’. Facing Hungary's fabled ‘Magnificent Magyars’ – a star-studded team spearheaded by the great Ferenc Puskas – in the final, West Germany produced one of the great World Cup shocks as Herberger masterminded a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. Herberger remained a fixture on football's biggest stage for another eight years, leading West Germany to the semi-finals in 1958 and the quarters in 1962.

Coached: France (1986), Cameroon (1994), Morocco (1998) and Côte d'Ivoire (2006)

A versatile coach with an exceptional understanding of African football, Michel took charge of six national teams and three club sides over nearly 20 years of working on the continent. The Frenchman led three of those nations – Cameroon, Morocco and Côte d'Ivoire – at the World Cup, most notably guiding The Elephants to their first-ever victory, a 3-2 triumph over Serbia and Montenegro. It came two decades after Michel had led France, whom he had captained as a player, to a third-placed finish at Mexico 1986.

Coached: Hungary (1958, 1962, 1966 and 1978)

A hugely respected figure in international football, Baroti coached his country at four World Cups. Highlights included a 2-1 victory over England en route to the 1962 quarter-finals, and a defeat of then-world champions Brazil in the 1966 group stage. Although Baroti never guided Hungary past the World Cup quarter-finals, he did lead his nation to Olympic gold in 1968.

Coached: England (1950, 1954, 1958 and 1962)

England's first-ever national team coach, Winterbottom led the Three Lions at four consecutive World Cups. No England coach before or since has matched that sequence. Although World Cup success proved elusive, Winterbottom played a pivotal role in modernising English football, establishing many of the structures and coaching principles that would contribute to the Three Lions’ eventual triumph under Alf Ramsey on home soil in 1966.
