Paraguay World Cup 2026 Round 1 Review: Albirroja Overwhelmed as USA Run Riot at SoFi

The Match

Paraguay came into the 2026 World Cup on the back of a solid qualification campaign, but June 13 at SoFi Stadium proved a harsh welcome to the tournament's biggest stage. A United States side playing in front of a roaring home crowd dismantled the Albirroja 4-1 in a performance that exposed real vulnerabilities in Paraguay's shape and defensive structure. The nightmare began as early as the seventh minute when a Bobadilla own goal, created by Christian Pulisic's devastating burst down the left flank, gave the USA an immediate advantage. Before Paraguay could settle, Folarin Balogun had added a second on 31 minutes and then a third just before half-time, leaving Daniel Garnero's men with a mountain to climb at the interval. The second half offered a brief moment of hope when substitute Mauricio pulled one back on 73 minutes, but Giovanni Reyna's sumptuous late finish in stoppage time confirmed the emphatic defeat. On the night, Paraguay mustered barely a handful of genuine chances, and at no point did they look capable of mounting a meaningful comeback.

Standout Performers

There were few bright spots for Paraguay on an evening to forget, but Miguel Almirón, deployed in a more advanced midfield role, showed flashes of the quality that has defined his club career. His ability to carry the ball forward and create uncertainty gave the USA defenders moments of worry, even if his end product was ultimately lacking in the right areas. In central defence, Gustavo Velázquez worked tirelessly to organise those around him and competed bravely with Balogun throughout — he simply could not prevent the American striker's movement from exposing gaps elsewhere. Substitute Mauricio's goal, his first international strike, gave the travelling Paraguay supporters something to celebrate and demonstrated that there is still fight in this squad despite the scoreline.

Tactical Picture

Paraguay's 4-4-2 shape looked adequate on paper but was consistently overrun in midfield by the USA's pressing and the dynamism of McKennie and Musah. The Albirroja were too slow to close down when the Americans won the ball back high, and Pulisic's speed in transition repeatedly found Paraguay's wide defenders caught too high or too narrow. In possession, Paraguay showed some willingness to play out from the back, but with Balogun pressing aggressively from the front, simple balls into the striker became dangerous for their centre-backs. Garnero will need to find solutions at both ends of the pitch if Paraguay are to survive the group stage.

Group Implications

Paraguay find themselves bottom of Group D after one game with zero points and a -3 goal difference. Australia's 2-0 win over Türkiye in Vancouver means the bottom two sides — Paraguay and Türkiye — are both already in desperate need of a result in their next fixtures. Paraguay's remaining games against Australia and Türkiye are now effectively must-win affairs; anything less than four or five points from those two matches and their tournament will be over before it has properly begun. The schedule is brutal and the psychological challenge of bouncing back from such a heavy defeat is significant.

One to Watch Next

Miguel Almirón's influence on Paraguay's next match will be critical. If the squad can rally around their most experienced creative player and give him the platform to dictate from midfield, there is still talent in this squad capable of producing a reaction. The defensive organisation will need to be significantly tighter — the USA exposed the wide areas repeatedly, and the next opponents will have watched the film. Paraguay's tournament is not over, but the margin for error is already razor-thin. How they respond to adversity in the coming days will define the character of this generation of Albirroja players.
