Pedro Porro is no stranger to scoring spectacular headers. In April, the Spain full-back showcased his skills when he found the net with an incredible leaping effort against Brighton and Hove Albion to reignite Tottenham Hotspur's push for Premier League safety.
The 26-year-old proved he is the head master once again after expertly connecting with Alex Baena's teasing cross to help secure at Los Angeles Stadium to seal their passage to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 16.
It was Porro's first international goal in 20 senior appearances and a moment he had been dreaming of since he was a little boy.
"Well, I've scored a lot of headers, it's not my first, but you really can't imagine [how it feels]. I had a feeling that Alex could put it there, and little by little I worked my way in. It's true that I lost track of my marker a bit; I don't know if he was behind me or my marker was behind me, but I trusted that the ball was going to fall there, and well, I just chipped it down, and I'm really happy," Porro said afterwards.
"It was truly a beautiful goal, because it's my first [international goal] and I'm also very happy for the team's victory. In fact, I'm still licking my lips.
"[I am feeling] a lot of happiness, especially since I never imagined this would happen. So, you really work hard from a young age for these moments to arrive. It's already difficult to [play] in a World Cup with your country, and honestly, scoring a goal in my first World Cup makes me incredibly happy, especially for my family who have been here supporting me."
Porro added his celebration was a tribute to his young son, who was holding a small ball in the air in a photo his wife sent him yesterday.
After starting slowly, Spain's World Cup campaign has come into life with another dominant performance and a fourth consecutive clean sheet. The European champions are looking a real danger as the Round of 16 approaches.
"The truth is that today's match was tough. We knew it was going to be a difficult match, and we did things very well from the beginning, both with and without the ball," Porro added. "We knew that Austria is a very good team. And I saw the team very focused from the first minute, and well, now we're thinking about the next round. It was a really complete performance from the whole team."
