Pedersen: I’m lost for words

Hammerfest is among the northernmost towns on the planet. It’s an Arctic arcadia esteemed for its northern lights, midnight sun, polar night, Meridian Column and Tyventrappa Sherpa. Located on the western shore of Kvaloya island, where football is merely a winter sport, it’s one of the unlikeliest spots to unearth a goalscoring hero. Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, however, scripted one of the most implausible stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at New York New Jersey Stadium. The 25-year-old right-back, who had never scored for Norway and had netted just once in three seasons at club level, began the showdown with Senegal on the bench. He was unleashed in the 13th minute, following a Julian Ryerson injury. Half-an-hour later Holmgren Pedersen – in unchartered territory in the attack – broke the deadlock in a 3-2 victory.

“I can’t even describe what’s happened to me,” Holmgren Pedersen told FIFA. “It’s my first goal for the national team. It’s a really big achievement for me. I’m super happy. “I’ve worked hard for such a long time for this World Cup. I prepared myself really well. I got a chance after 10 minutes and I had to grab it. I’m lost for words. It’s an unbelievable feeling. “So many people are congratulating me. It feels so good. It was especially good to do it in front of my family. I saw them after the game. “It’s emotional. It’s a big achievement for all of us. I’m really happy that we have gone through the group.”

“It’s a fantastic feeling,” said midfielder Sander Berge after Erling Haaland’s double propelled Norway to the W. “It was a tough fight. Senegal are such a strong, experienced team. To do that in our first World Cup, it was really special. I’ve been through a lot with these players.” Defender Leo Ostigard added: “We know that we are a good team and have a lot of quality. That was our target, to get six points. We’re very happy. “We have to take it game by game. This is the first time all of us players are playing in the World Cup. It’s new for all of us. We’re just enjoying everything. “We have been waiting a long time for this. The fans also have. It’s a special moment for the players and the fans all across Norway. We’re so happy to give them six points.”

Stale Solbakken’s soldiers all felt immeasurably grateful to their supporters. That’s why, upon the final whistle, they sunk to the soaking turf, forming the ‘Viking Row’ and performed it in front of their euphoric fans. “We’ve had such great support from the fans,” said Berge. “To give them this was a great feeling. To go through with a game to go is really special.” Holmgren Pedersen fittingly had the final word: “It’s amazing. So many people have come over here from Norway to support us, to cheer us on. The enthusiasm of our fans is unbelievable. We’re really happy for them. It feels as though this is a really special moment for Norway.”
