were leading Brazil 2-0 and closing in on a place in the quarter-finals when the Seleção were awarded a late penalty. smiled at Neymar as the Brazilian prepared to take a penalty that would prove too little, too late for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Even after watching the ball find the net to his left, nothing could wipe the smile off the Norwegian goalkeeper’s face. At the age of 35, he knew he had produced the finest performance of his career, helping the Landslaget overcome the five-time world champions. That afternoon of 5 July at New York New Jersey Stadium marked a defining moment for a veteran who has endured the harshest side of an already unforgiving position. While most goalkeepers measure their careers by the matches they play, Nyland learned to measure his by the long periods spent preparing for opportunities that never came.
For several seasons, Norway’s No1 had to accept a back-up role in some of Europe’s top leagues. Yet he never stopped preparing.
His patience was finally rewarded against Brazil. Nyland saved a first-half penalty, made several other crucial stops and, alongside and captain , played a leading role in Norway’s memorable . For those who have worked with him, however, his performance came as no surprise.
“What struck me most was his character,” Gaby Ruiz, Sevilla’s former technical director and one of the figures behind the goalkeeper’s move to the Spanish club, told FIFA in an exclusive interview.
“It was an incredibly high-pressure game, but he dealt with it brilliantly. The moment he smiled at Neymar summed up his personality, too.”
Nyland has been a free agent since his Sevilla contract expired on 30 June. He served as back-up during the 2025/26 season, making just seven appearances, but his World Cup performances have shown that the lack of playing time has done little to blunt his sharpness.
Now shining on the biggest stage in football, Nyland began his career in his native Norway with Hødd and Molde before moving to newly promoted Bundesliga side Ingolstadt. In 2019, he joined Aston Villa and helped the club earn promotion back to the Premier League.
The most difficult period of his career followed. After struggling to establish himself in the West Midlands, Nyland went on to sign for Norwich City, Bournemouth and Reading – all in the Championship – but made just 13 appearances across two full seasons between 2020 and 2022. Then, on 6 October 2022, the call came. RB Leipzig needed an experienced goalkeeper after first choice Peter Gulacsi suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. Only three days elapsed between the initial call and Nyland putting pen to paper. “It really felt like he had always been part of this club and this team,” Frederik Goßling, goalkeeping coach at the German club, explained to FIFA. “He has a very strong personality. It didn’t take him any time at all to integrate into the group. We were very clear with him that Janis Blaswich would be our number one, and Orjan accepted that role. He understood exactly what he had to do to help us, and it was a joy to work with him from day one.”
Nyland spent just one season at Leipzig, but left a lasting impression, with Gößling particularly struck by the Norwegian’s professionalism. “He showed up every single day. He didn’t look back too much and he didn’t look too far ahead. He prepared himself professionally every day for the moment when his chance would come. Look at what Orjan did with that time he wasn’t playing. He is a role model for any goalkeeper: be patient, prepare every day, and when your moment comes, be ready.”
Throughout that unsettled spell, Nyland retained the faith of Norway coach , who continued to entrust him with the No1 shirt.
His professionalism and continued involvement with the Vikings helped keep him in contention for new opportunities. That consistency at international level helped open the door to Sevilla in 2023, when the club sought a replacement for Morocco goalkeeper following his move to Al Hilal.
“We knew Bounou would be leaving because he was one of the players the club needed to sell,” recalled Ruiz. “We therefore began looking for a goalkeeper who could be brought in at minimal cost. We compiled a shortlist of free agents, and Nyland stood out as one of the best options.”
Sevilla had to back their assessment of the player. Nyland had spent many a season on the fringes, but the Spanish club looked beyond his lack of regular playing time. “He was a free agent, so the deal came together very quickly. He signed a one-year contract on a modest salary. Given the quality we were getting at that price, it was a real bargain,” Ruiz said.
Nyland’s wealth of experience counted in his favour, but it was his character that ultimately won over the club’s decision-makers. “When we met him, he left an excellent impression on us; both as a person and as a professional, Nyland is absolutely top class,” Ruiz affirmed.
The Norwegian spent two seasons as Sevilla’s first-choice goalkeeper – his first sustained run as a starter in a top-flight league – further cementing his place in the national team. However, he found himself back on the bench at club level for the 2025/26 season. Approaching 36, it might have seemed that his career was entering its final chapter. Then the World Cup gave him a new one to write. “His performances at the World Cup speak for themselves,” Ruiz commented. “He was superb against Brazil. He’s looked solid throughout the tournament, but that performance was something else.”
After Norway reached the quarter-finals – with at Miami Stadium – both Goßling and Ruiz were quick to send Nyland their congratulations.
“I texted him after the game to congratulate him on a great performance and told him to keep rowing because maybe the quarter-finals are not the end of the journey,” Ruiz said.
“Saving the penalty is what everyone remembers, but there were many other moments when he showed what an intelligent goalkeeper he is, along with so many other strengths. I couldn’t be happier for him.”
