Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu has signed a short-term contract extension until the end of next year’s AFC Asian Cup, when he will be replaced by current U-21 national team boss Go Oiwa.

The 57-year-old was appointed in July 2018 and became the first coach in the nation's history to oversee 100 international matches. Across 107 games in charge to date, he has recorded 73 wins, 15 draws and 19 defeats.
He will aim to finish his tenure on a high at the Asian Cup, which is being held in Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February 2027. Japan are targeting a first continental title since 2011.
Oiwa, 54, will take the senior national team coaching reins from March 2027. He will continue to oversee the Japan U-23 side preparing for the Los Angeles Olympic Games while serving as senior team coach and his contract will run through to World Cup 2030.
