Messi joins Ronaldo in scoring at five men's World Cups

On 16 June, 20 years to the day since he made a goalscoring debut versus Serbia and Montenegro, Lionel Messi became just the second player in history to net at five men's tournaments, joining Cristiano Ronaldo in achieving the feat.

The did so in style. He scored his first World Cup hat-trick to sink Algeria in Kansas City, taking his tally of World Cup goals to 16 and level with Miroslav Klose's all-time record.

Ronaldo made history at Qatar 2022, smashing home a penalty against Ghana to make him the first male player to score at five tournaments. He added to strikes at Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, taking his tally to eight.

The superstar forward will look to pull away from Messi once more at these finals, as begin their Group K campaign against Congo DR in Houston.
