Mamelodi Sundowns clinch African title

Mamelodi Sundowns win CAF Champions League final

South African side beat ASFAR 2-1 on aggregate to clinch title

They have qualified for FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2026 and FIFA Club World Cup 2029

Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned CAF Champions League winners, securing qualification for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2026™ and FIFA Club World Cup 2029™.

The South African side clinched the title by beating Moroccan team ASFAR 2-1 on aggregate in the two-legged final. Having won the first leg 1-0 in Pretoria, Sundowns battled out a 1-1 draw in the Rabat return match to bag their second continental triumph.

ASFAR goal: Mohamed Hrimat (40 pen) Mamelodi Sundowns goal: Teboho Mokoena (45+7)

Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams were Mamelodi Sundowns’ heroes in a dramatic second leg in Rabat.

After a bright start from the South African side, ASFAR grew into the game and were awarded a penalty when Divine Lunga fouled Reda Slim. Mohamed Hrimat slotted home the spot-kick to draw the teams level on aggregate.

The Sundowns responded superbly, though, and regained their advantage on the stroke of half-time. From a cross delivered by Brayan Leon, Tashreeq Matthews found Mokoena with a brilliant flick, who beat Reda Tagnaouti with an unstoppable drive.

In the second half, ASFAR had a golden chance to make it 2-1 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate when they were awarded another penalty following a foul by Williams on Youssef El Fahli. With 13 minutes of regulation time remaining, Hrimat stepped up again to take the kick, but this time Williams saved his attempt. Sundowns then controlled the game to see out the victory and secure their second African title, ten years after winning their first.

"What this team has been through, not only this season, the last four, five, six years, knocking on the door every season, playing over 60, 70 games... Finally the door opened for us. We deserve it, fully. Finally, we get to add the star. It's amazing." Ronwen Williams, Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper
