The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have appointed former Azzurri icon Paolo Maldini as the association's new technical director.
“It is with great pleasure that the FIGC President, Giovanni Malago, announces that Paolo Maldini has accepted the role of Technical Director of the Federation. Paolo Maldini will carry out this role alongside Leonardo, who will serve as an advisor,” the FIGC announced via its official channels.
Maldini's return to the national team set up — alongside official advisor Leonardo — comes on the back of a dismal period for the Azzurri. Despite winning UEFA EURO 2020 under Roberto Mancini, Italy have failed to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups™. The legendary former defender brings an extensive pedigree, having made 127 appearances for Italy, with his final cap coming at the 2002 World Cup against Korea Republic in the Round of 16. Maldini also served as captain of the national team from 1993 to 2002 and remains one of the most recognisable faces in Italian football. Most recently, he helped architect AC Milan's return to the top of Serie A, as sporting director during their 2021/22 title campaign.
