Letters that Unite: Guillermo Ochoa

The is a time of career-defining milestones for many players. It is an opportunity to measure how far they have come as well as to hear from people close to them. FIFA is bringing those moments to the forefront with its 'Letters That Unite' series.

The latest recipient is 's veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. His letter from 13-year-old daughter Lucciana provided a chance to reflect on his career trajectory from football-loving boy to veteran of six World Cups. "I would tell that child to keep believing in himself, despite difficulties and obstacles, and he will fulfil his dreams. To finish my career, such a long journey, with a World Cup in Mexico is fantastic," said Ochoa.

For Lucciana, though, Guillermo Ochoa's No1 status begins at home – as her father. "Many people know about you because of everything you've achieved in football… but for me, above everything else, you're my dad," she wrote, acknowledging the sacrifices involved in a 152-cap international career with club commitments in various countries: "I've seen the effort that lies behind all that, the trips, the training sessions and the birthdays you missed because you were working – all to represent Mexico."

There have been lessons in resilience too. "Even though many times it wasn't easy, you never gave up," added Lucciana. "That's one of the most important things you've taught us: to keep going and give it our all. Whatever happens during this World Cup, you're already a winner in our eyes, not just because of football but because of who you are, how hard you work, the example you set."

Just as Lucciana is sensitive to the personal qualities which have sustained Ochoa's professional life, so the goalkeeper is deeply grateful for the support and understanding of Lucciana and her two siblings, along with his wife Karla and parents.

"Without them, I wouldn't have been able to do it," he said, recognising the absences they have had to endure as a family. "I've missed birthdays, first communions, school events – special moments of watching them grow up – and they've kept giving me the strength and energy to carry on. It's been very difficult, but the effort we've put in together has been worth it. It won't be long before we're all together again."
