Jorge Jesus has been appointed as the new head coach of , succeeding Roberto Martinez following the Seleção's campaign.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the appointment of the experienced coach on Friday, with Jesus taking charge of his country for the first time after an illustrious club career spanning more than three decades.
Most recently, the 71-year-old tactician led Al-Nassr to their first Saudi Pro League title in seven years, coaching Portugal captain and forward Joao Felix at the Riyadh club. Ronaldo has yet to confirm whether he will continue his international career beyond the World Cup in North America.
Jesus replaces Martinez, whose tenure ended following Portugal's in North America.
The former Benfica and Flamengo coach brings one of the most decorated coaching CVs in Portuguese football to the national team role. He won three Primeira Liga titles during his first spell with Benfica, adding a string of domestic cups before enjoying success abroad.
His greatest achievement outside Portugal came with Flamengo as he guided the Brazilian giants to a historic Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro double in 2019. He later coached Fenerbahce before taking charge of Al Hilal – leading the Saudi club to a league and King's Cup double while overseeing a world-record run of 34 consecutive victories. This May, he added another Saudi Pro League triumph with Ronaldo and Al-Nassr.
The appointment reunites Jesus with several members of the current Portugal squad. Along with Ronaldo and Felix at Al-Nassr, he previously coached Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo at Al Hilal, while earlier spells in Portugal saw him work with players including Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Ramos.
Jesus now begins the challenge of building on the foundations left by Martinez, who guided Portugal to the UEFA Nations League title in 2025.
