How Tillman could tip things in USA's favour

There is a long history of German-American players who have suited up for at the FIFA World Cup™. Nuremberg-born Mike Windischmann captained the Stars and Stripes at Italia ’90, the Yanks’ first appearance in the big dance since 1950, while Bechhofen native Thomas Dooley was a big part of the 1994 team on home soil.

Under coach Jurgen Klinsmann, five German-Americans dotted the Brazil 2014 squad, highlighted by John Brooks' late winner against Ghana, Jermaine Jones' screamer against Portugal and a round-of-16 strike for Julian Green against Belgium.

Fast forward to another global finals on home soil and it is Malik Tillman proudly boasting the German-American mantle, and like his predecessors, he is adding quality and skill to a team eager to excel.

Also born in Nuremberg, to an American father and a German mother, Tillman rose up through the youth ranks at Bayern Munich and ultimately made his senior team debut with the Bundesliga giants.

He largely represented Germany at youth level before making a one-time switch to USA in 2022. A strong season in the Scottish Premier League with Rangers led to former USA World Cup star and PSV Eindhoven director of football Earnie Stewart securing Tillman’s services with the Dutch side.

Tillman thrived in the Eredivisie, scoring 21 goals across two seasons to earn a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen and a spot on Mauricio Pochettino’s roster for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. Tillman answered the bell in his first big chance with the national team with three goals and two assists as USA finished as runners-up. His performance on the continental stage came as no surprise to Stewart.

“Malik Tillman would probably be top of my list to start because what I've experienced here at PSV, the player that he is and the quality that he can bring. He's world class,” Stewart told FIFA.

“I think [Tillman] is one of the best players ever to put on an American jersey as well,” added Stewart in a separate interview with CBS. “He’s a great person, and also a tremendous player.”

A broad audience in the States will have the opportunity to see Tillman’s skill at the , with the 24-year-old midfielder earning a place on . A sneak peak came in last Sunday’s 3-2 friendly victory against Senegal. Tillman was part of the 10-man crew that came on at half-time.

During last year’s Gold Cup Tillman was deployed in more of an advanced position, but all signs point toward Pochettino utilising him in a deeper midfield role in the upcoming finals, an area he has manned at club level.

“We think that the capacity of Malik or Weston [McKennie] going a bit deeper – we have better possibilities in our buildup and better control to play much better, to claim the ball easier, to move the ball more quickly and to have this capacity to put the ball in the final third in a better condition,” Pochettino said following the squad announcement.

“We need to be strong in our defensive side but we also need players in front of our center-backs that have the possibility to play and feel comfortable.”

Tillman’s composure with the ball and ability to connect in midfield was evidenced against Senegal. In the 75th minute he played a tidy one-two combination with McKennie, drawing two defenders with him and then slipping a no-look pass to Folarin Balogun, whose wide-open shot was saved.

His pressing also stood out. He forced a turnover deep in the Senegalese half and then played a pass in between a pair of defenders to find Balogun for a goal that was wiped away for offside. Despite that disappointment, it was impossible to ignore the chemistry between the two in their time on the field.

Those two sequences showcased what Tillman brings to the table for a USA team that will need midfielders to serve as creative outlets in Group D against Australia, Paraguay and Türkiye. He might just be the man that tips things in their favour.
