FIFA Power Rankings: El Khannouss and Alajbegovic among biggest climbers

Over the past few days there have been some major moves in the Power Rankings thanks to some massive performances in the second and third round of matches in the tournament.

Lionel Messi sneaked back to first place in Attacking after starring in while Michael Olise stayed top of the tree for Creativity following his role in . Belgium's Brandon Mechele climbed one spot to No1 in Defending.

Morocco's Bilal El Khannouss was the highest climber in any category as he went up to 24th spot in Creativity. He was followed by Bosnia's Kerim Alajbegovic, who flew up 276 places up to 23rd in Attacking.

Côte d'Ivoire had two big climbers: Guela Doue rose 107 places in Defending, while double goalscorer Nicolas Pepe soared to 19th in Attacking. Canada's Alistair Johnston was another big climber, moving up 103 places in Defending.

The latest update reflects all matches played up to and including Türkiye's victory over the USA and Australia's draw with Paraguay.

Alajbegovic announced himself to the world as Bosnia and Herzegovina reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The 18-year-old played a vital role in the historic win over Qatar, breaking the deadlock with his scorching strike from long range and becoming the eighth youngest player to score at a World Cup as well as the youngest ever to score from outside the area. It was not just his goal that made his performance so impressive though. His link up play with Sead Kolasinac proved threating for Bosnia all game and his ability to take players on, doing so 11 times in the game, created dangerous moments around Qatar’s penalty area. His tremendous display saw him fly 276 places up the Attacking standings to 23rd. The Bayer Leverkusen-bound youngster also stood out for his creative play, moving up 25 places and into seventh in the Creativity rankings with a new score of 7.15.

Pepe etched his name into his country's history against Curaçao by inspiring Côte d’Ivoire into the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time, at the fourth attempt. Pepe recorded the match's highest attacking score after scoring both goals, each from open play, making him the most decisive player by a clear margin. Pepe's match-winning display saw him rocket 137 spots up to 19th in attacking.

El Khannouss dictated Morocco's attacking rhythm during their epic 4-2 comeback win over Haiti, doing so through progressive distribution and intelligent positioning between the opponents' midfield and defensive units. He made 20 progressive passes and was the highest ranked player in the game for breaking lines. The Stuttgart midfielder ability to break lines with forward passes repeatedly connected Morocco's midfield with their rotating front four. His passing allowed Morocco to consistently access advanced central areas and sustain attacking pressure, providing the platform for many of their most dangerous attacking sequences. El Khannouss climbed up a stunning 351 places into 24th place.

While Qatar bowed out of the tournament following their 3-1 loss by Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 2022 hosts produced a spirited performance and Afif was at the heart of it. He was Qatar’s main creator and the highest ranked player in the game, due to his progressive passes, pass threat in the final third and crossing ability. He made 12 progressive passes and broke defensive unit lines five times. Despite playing in an unfamiliar centre forward role, the Al Sadd livewire created several chances during the game. His ability to break lines and produce high quality crosses in the final third gave Qatar a threat throughout the match.

Pepe was not the only Côte d’Ivoire player to make his mark against Curaçao. Doue recorded the highest defensive score in the game, contributing to his side's clean sheet. The Strasbourg star regained possession eight times as well as displaying perfect efficiency in his duels and clearance. It meant he rose 107 places into 25th.

While Canada succumbed to defeat in their third game, Johnston stood tall for his defensive display against Switzerland, which saw him move up 103 places into 39th position. He was the second highest ranked defender in the game, gaining a score just 0.1 below Ricardo Rodriguez. The Celtic right-back won five aerial duels and gained possession eight times. He provided Canada's strongest all-round defensive contribution, combining physical competitiveness with reliable ball-winning.
