The Netherlands opened their Group F campaign at Dallas Stadium with a against Japan in what started out as a cagey affair before turning into a breathtaking back and forth in the second stanza.
The Dutch led on two occasions in the period, only to succumb to a Japanese equaliser, the latter coming in the waning minutes. While left frustrated by the result, Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong took plenty of positives from the performance, notably against a disciplined Japan defence that tested their composure.
“I think we had a good defensive organization, and then with the ball I think we did well,” De Jong told FIFA following the match.
“We were patient. It was difficult because they defended us very well in a low block, but we created some situations and some chances, so I think in the end it was a good game from us. Now we will focus on Sweden and look forward to that game.”
The Oranje faithful will make the trip down Interstate 45 to Houston for another Texas tussle, this time against the Swedes. Sunday’s encounter in Dallas was the World Cup debut for Jan Paul van Hecke, who took a moment to pause and reflect on his journey to playing on the biggest stage.
“It’s a great honour to represent your country in the World Cup, and here in America is unbelievable," said Van Hecke to FIFA. "Especially if you come into this stadium. It’s one of the best stadiums I’ve been in.”
Like De Jong, the hulking 26-year-old centre back rued the late Japan equaliser, but is already looking to turn the page.
“It was a good experience. In the end I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t get the three points, but now we move on,” said Van Hecke.
