Alphonso Davies' return to Los Angeles Stadium could not have gone better than he ever imagined.
The last time the Canada superstar played the venue, during the Concacaf Nations League finals in March 2025, he tore his ACL and further damaged his knee, an injury which put him out for eight months. But Davies's much-anticipated comeback to the venue played out perfectly.
Not only did he come through the match unscathed in making his first appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ as a second-half substitute after recovering from a recent hamstring injury. He also played a key role in to reach the Round of 16 in the global finals for the first time in the country's history.
It was the most dramatic of endings for Canada, who laboured at times against South Africa but found a winner in the 92nd minute thanks to a brilliant opportunistic strike from Stephen Eustaquio, who plays his club football for Major League Soccer's LAFC.
"The ending was incredible. Coming on to the pitch, we needed some energy and I think the coach [Jesse Marsch] made the subs at the right time and get the win. [Eustaquio] hit a beautiful volley in the corner... it was absolutely top. We're ecstatic right now and happy to be continuing in this tournament," Davies told FIFA.
There were incredible scenes after Eustaquio's late winner when the entire squad celebrated together on the side of the field, memories which Davies will cherish for a lifetime.
"You could see everyone was running on the pitch because it means so much to us. This is our second World Cup [in succession] and the first one didn't really go as planned. For most of us, this is a dream come true and we want to continue this run and continue pushing forward," he added.
Davies has been impatiently waiting in the wings to make his debut in this World Cup and there was a sense of joy and relief for him personally to finally take to the field.
"It was tough. The first three games watching, sitting down... even the friendly games. It was tough but I knew my time would come. I just had to stay patient and keep working. The team, the coach gave me the platform to take my time and the boys did well and gave me the opportunity to step on the pitch today and I applaud them for that."
So how far can Canada go? They face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16. "That is up to us. We knew we have tough opponents ahead. For us, the sky is the limit. We have talent on this team and we have motivation. I think the next few days will be important to recover and focus on our opponents."
There was a neat sense of symmetry in Davies making his Canada comeback on the field where he suffered his horrific ACL injury. Does he consider his successful comeback the closing of that chapter?
"You could say that but I'm sure I'm going to be back here at one point in my career. You can say the chapter is not closed for now but unwritten for sure."
