have reached the semi-finals by excelling in different areas, and the latest highlight the contrasting strengths that have carried these European heavyweights to the last four.
France boast the tournament's leading players in both the 'Attacking' and 'Creativity' categories, with Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise continuing to set the benchmark after Les Bleus' 2-0 quarter-final victory over Morocco. Spain, meanwhile, have established themselves as the competition's outstanding defensive side, led by Rodri and with four of the top five players in the 'Defending' rankings.
Ahead of Tuesday's semi-final, FIFA takes a look at France and Spain’s influence on the Power Rankings.
Few players have influenced the tournament more consistently than , who retained top spot in the overall Attacking rankings after another decisive display against Morocco. The France captain scored once, provided an assist and demonstrated exactly why he has been one of the competition's most feared attacking players.
Mbappe’s match Attacking score of 8.45 against the Atlas Lions was comfortably the highest in France's quarter-final, though France's strength in this category extends beyond their captain. Ousmane Dembele (7.23) climbed three places to sixth overall after scoring against Morocco, while Desire Doue (5.89) was one of the biggest movers of the quarter-finals, rising 33 places to 30th.
Spain’s attacking influence has been distributed more evenly across the team. La Roja do not currently have a player inside the top 10, but , Mikel Oyarzabal (6.04) and Fabian Ruiz (5.67) have each made important contributions during the knockout stage. Ruiz scored in the quarter-final victory over Belgium, while Yamal continued to stretch opponents through his movement and progressive play.
France also continued to dominate the Creativity rankings after the quarter-finals, with still the tournament's highest-rated player. Although he did not directly contribute a goal against Morocco, the Bayern Munich winger once again showed his value to the team. His 13 ball progressions, nine completed midfield line breaks and involvement in 11 attacking sequences helped him preserve first place overall.
Not content with topping the Attacking standings, Mbappe (7.65) is fourth overall in Creativity too after providing an assist and repeatedly stretching Morocco's back line with his movement in behind, giving France two of the top three players in the category.
Spain's chief creative force remains Yamal (7.48), who remains fourth overall after another intelligent display against Belgium. The teenager completed eight progressive passes and repeatedly found dangerous spaces behind the Belgian defence, while Alex Baena (6.90) and Dani Olmo (6.73) are also among the tournament's leading creative performers – rising to 16th and 25th respectively after that hard-fought victory over the Red Devils.
If France have set the standard in attack, Spain have certainly done so without the ball. Rodri (7.90) reclaimed first place in the overall Defending rankings with another commanding display in midfield against Belgium, with his reading of the game, positioning and ability to break up attacks once again providing the platform for Luis de la Fuente’s side to claim victory.
The Manchester City midfielder now leads a remarkable Spanish presence in the category, with four Spain players occupying places inside the overall top five. Pedro Porro (7.64) retains second place overall and Aymeric Laporte (7.42) climbed to fourth after an assured quarter-final performance, as Spain's defensive organisation continues to be reflected across the rankings.
Against Belgium, Rodri led the match for defensive impact through blocks, interceptions and defensive positioning, while Laporte contributed 11 possession regains and four retained interceptions as Spain resisted Belgium's attacking threat before finding a late winner.
France also head into their third successive World Cup semi-final with a defence in excellent form after keeping another clean sheet against Morocco. Adrien Rabiot (6.90) climbed 42 places to 14th overall after producing the highest defensive score of the match after recording four retained interceptions, seven possession regains and four aerial duels won. Elsewhere, Les Bleus players Lucas Digne (7.29), William Saliba (6.89), Manu Kone (6.79) and Jules Kounde (6.49) also feature in the top 40 of the Power Rankings for Defending.
England's victory over Norway was inspired by two-goal hero , whose display saw him rise four places to second place in the Attacking standings. Bellingham's Three Lions team-mate Anthony Gordon (7.81) is also up to second overall in Creativity, after another fine display at Miami Stadium. England No1 Jordan Pickford (7.27) saw plenty of the ball against Norway and his contribution saw him rise to the top of the In Possession goalkeeper rankings, replacing South Africa's Ronwen Williams).
Norway's Andreas Schjelderup (6.66) scored the opening goal of his side's quarter-final defeat and was rewarded with a rise of 45 places to 11th in the Power Rankings. Despite Belgium’s last-eight exit, Jeremy Doku (7.75) and Charles De Ketelaere (7.13) both made significant gains in the Power Rankings. Doku climbed five places to third overall in Creativity after recording a match-high 19 ball progressions and completing five line breaks against Spain. De Ketelaere, meanwhile, rose five places to seventh in Attacking after scoring Belgium’s equaliser and registering the highest score of the match in that category.
