Bellingham-Haaland friendship on ice in quarter-finals

When in the ™ quarter-finals, and will exchange a customary embrace and perhaps a few jovial words before kick-off. Then friendship gives way to competition. For 90 minutes – possibly more – two of football's closest pals become each other's greatest obstacle.

Their bond was forged at Borussia Dortmund, the German giants rooted in the old steel communities of the Ruhr. They arrived as teenagers carrying extraordinary expectations and quickly emerged as two of the leading figures in a new wave of talent. Haaland had already cemented his reputation as one of world football's most feared young goalscorers; Bellingham soon blossomed into arguably its most complete midfielder. Together, they lit up the Bundesliga.

Rarely were they seen apart, whether celebrating goals, laughing through training sessions or joking in front of the cameras. Their chemistry off the pitch proved almost as captivating as their partnership on it.

One particularly memorable moment came after Dortmund's UEFA Champions League group-stage victory over Besiktas in September 2021. Haaland was giving a post-match interview, describing Bellingham as "amazing" and marvelling that he was "three years younger than me", when the Englishman wandered into shot, planted a kiss on his team-mate's cheek and disappeared. The BVB No9 tried – and failed – to suppress a grin before continuing.

Their mischievous repartee carried into a Valentine's Day special for Dortmund's official YouTube channel. The pair struggled to contain their amusement as they exchanged brilliantly cheesy pick-up lines. Bellingham asked: "Is your name Google? Because you have everything I'm searching for." Neither could deliver the script with a straight face.

When Haaland joined Manchester City in 2022, distance did little to alter their bond. They stayed in regular contact, exchanging messages and celebrating each other's successes even as they crossed paths in the Champions League – first with Bellingham still at Dortmund, and again after his move to Real Madrid in 2023.

Another viral moment arrived during one of those meetings. As Real prepared to defend a corner, Bellingham – tasked with marking arguably the world's most dangerous striker – briefly rested his head on Haaland's chest. Within minutes, screenshots were flooding social media, another charming chapter added to football's favourite BFF scrapbook.

Such gestures have come to define their relationship. Bellingham has described Haaland as "like a brother" and "an even better guy than a striker" – and the feeling is clearly mutual. After Bellingham announced himself at Madrid by scoring on his competitive debut, Haaland was quick to celebrate his former team-mate's achievement: "That makes me very happy for him."

The camaraderie has endured despite transfers, Champions League meetings and the demands of global stardom, with both players now firmly among world football's elite. Alongside the likes of and , they represent the leading figures of a new generation expected to shape the game for years to come.

Although their journeys may have unfolded side by side, how they impose themselves on the pitch could hardly be more different. Haaland is ruthlessness personified – a devastating blend of explosive pace, relentless movement, physical power and a finishing instinct that borders on perfection. Give him half a chance and he rarely needs a second invitation.

Bellingham, by contrast, is the quintessential modern midfielder. The 23-year-old dictates the tempo, breaks lines with his passing, drives forward from midfield, creates chances and arrives late in the penalty area with the timing of a natural goalscorer. He combines that technical brilliance with the presence and personality of a future captain. If Haaland is the wrecking ball, Bellingham is the conductor.

Now those talents collide on football's biggest stage, with a place in the World Cup semi-finals at stake. England know stopping the 25-year-old Haaland – already with seven goals at his first World Cup – is the first priority. Norway face the equally daunting task of containing Bellingham, whose four goals and one assist have been instrumental in the Three Lions' run.

At , one will move to within two wins of lifting football's most coveted prize. The other will begin the long journey home. Afterwards, the hugs will surely return, the shirts will almost certainly be exchanged and perhaps there will even be another peck on the cheek for old times' sake. But until then, friendship must take a back seat. The bromance can wait. The World Cup cannot.
