9 days to go: Record routs

The biggest victory in a World Cup game was by nine goals. It was set by Hungary in 1954, and equalled by Yugoslavia in 1974 and Hungary themselves in 1982. Hungary underscored their status as the scorching title favourites at the fifth global finals by dismantling Korea Republic 9-0 in their Zurich opener. Peter Palotas and Ferenc Puskas bagged braces, while Sandor Kocsis hit a hat-trick. Yugoslavia thrashed Zaire by the same score in Gelsenkirchen 20 years later, Dragan Dzajic and Dusan Bajevic starring. Hungary then hammered El Salvador 10-1 in Elche in 1982, with Laszlo Kiss scoring a historic hat-trick from the bench.
