Four sets of brothers have scored in the World Cup. Ottmar Walter and Fritz Walter were the first, getting seven goals between them as West Germany triumphed for the first time in 1954. Willy and Rene van de Kerkhof were part of the Netherlands’ squads that finished runners-up in 1974 and 1978, and both netted in the latter. Socrates and Rai were the third set of siblings to score in the competition. Coincidentally, they were both on target on their World Cup debut, as Brazil captain, with second-half penalties, in victories against the same team (Soviet Union and Russia), in 1982 and 1994 respectively.
Michael and Brian Laudrup were the last brothers to find the target in the World Cup. Michael got a goal apiece in 1986 and 1998, with Brian bagging twice in France.
The Walters and England’s 1966 heroes Jack and Bobby Charlton are the only brothers to have lifted the trophy.
