Austria and Portugal share the record for the biggest comeback victory in World Cup history. They remarkably rallied from three goals down to win. Switzerland led 3-0 inside 20 minutes in the 1954 quarter-finals, only for Austria to triumph 7-5 in the ‘The Heat Battle of Lausanne’ and the highest-scoring match the tournament has ever seen. Portugal trailed North Korea by three at the same stage in 1966, but Eusebio inspired them to a 5-3 success.
Along the most memorable two-goal fightback wins were West Germany against Hungary in the 1954 final and England in the 1970 quarter-finals, and Belgium against Japan in 2018. Six of the first seven World Cup finals resulted in comebacks victories, pulled off by Uruguay against Argentina in 1930, Italy against Czechoslovakia in 1934, West Germany against Hungary in 1954, Brazil against Sweden in 1958 and Czechoslovakia in 1962, and England against West Germany in 1966.
